Pershing boys, King girls defeat Cass Tech to win PSL basketball championships

King repeated as queens and Pershing returned to the throne Friday night in the Detroit Public School League’s boys and girls varsity basketball championships at University of Detroit Mercy Calihan Hall.

kingchampsKing High’s No. 1 state-ranked Lady Crusaders (17-0) won their second consecutive PSL girls’ championship with a 45-38 victory against previously unbeaten Cass Tech (16-1).

pershingchampsPershing High’s No. 1 state-ranked Doughboys (19-0) rolled 80-61 against Cass Tech (16-2) to win their third league boys’ championship in five years and first since 2010.

A crowd estimated at 5,000 witnessed the championship doubleheader finale to the Big D Tournament.

Between games, King’s Antania Hayes, a 6-0 senior guard headed to DePaul University, and Pershing’s Kahlil Felder, a 5-9 senior guard bound for Oakland University, were announced as this year’s Miss PSL and Mr. PSL, an honor accorded to the top girl and boy player as voted by the league’s head coaches.
