Top-notch contenders to battle Friday in Big D finale for the PSL girls’ and boys’ basketball crowns

Three teams with perfect records and another with just one defeat will comprise a sterling cast of contenders Friday at University of Detroit Mercy Calihan Hall. 

The 2012-13 Detroit Public School League girls’ and boys’ basketball championship games promise a conclusion to the Big D Tournament that you don’t want to miss. 

Friday’s action starts with the girls’ title game at 5 p.m., a battle of unbeatens between Cass Tech (16-0) and No. 1 state-ranked King (16-0). In the 7:30 p.m. boys’ championship game, No. 1 state-ranked Pershing (18-0) squares off against Cass Tech (16-1). Admission is $10.

In the Big D boys’ semifinals Tuesday at Cass Tech High School, Coach Wydell Henry’s Pershing Doughboys stayed unbeaten with a 50-40 victory against Douglass (11-6) after Coach David Dixon’s Technicians won a 61-60 thriller against Southeastern (14-4) on a tip-in as time expired.
