Renaissance High’s Jayna Fullove is a four-year varsity player who leaves everything on the court.

“She doesn’t know the meaning of quit,’’ Lady Phoenix girls’ basketball coach Kiwan Ward said of Fullove, the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week.

PSL Junior Varsity Basketball 063“Jayna (pronounced Ja-Nay) is  our captain and she takes great pride in playing defense. Usually she’s guarding the other team’s best player. She plays every game and she does not take a possession off. She’s a true motivator who never lets her teammates get down of themselves.”

Fullove, a 5-9 senior guard-forward, is averaging 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists a game and is optimistic about the Lady Phoenix’s PSL championship possibilities entering Monday’s first round of the Big D girls’ basketball tournament. Renaissance is the No. 2 seed in the West

“I think we’re going all the way,’’ said Fullove, dismissing any concern about having to beat out Cass Tech, the top seed in the West, and East top seed King High, the state’s No. 1-ranked team. “We’ve had some tough games, but at this point of the season, I feel we’re coming together as a team. We’ve just got to keep working hard to make it to the next level.”

Fullove, who has a 3.7 grade point average, fully anticipates playing at the next level, although she’s still entertaining college scholarship possibilities and doesn’t know where she’ll have an opportunity to pursue her degree. “Wherever I go, I plan to major in psychology and continue playing basketball,’’ she said.

In agreeing with her coach’s assessment, Fullove said her never-say-quit attitude is what has gotten her this far.

“It’s just the attitude that I’ve always had,’’ she said. “Being a leader, I take a lot of pride in giving it my all on the court. That’s the attitude I have about everything I want to achieve in life.”

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys and girls athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and sponsored for the third year in a row by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
