D’Andre Johnson, a 6-1 senior, and Lauren Elliott, a 5-4 junior, are talented point guards whose consistent play and strong leadership have led Cass Tech High’s boys and girls basketball teams, respectively, to the top of the Detroit Public School League West Division.

With both the Technicians and Lady Technicians destined to be top seeds when the Big D tournament starts next week, both Johnson and Elliott have been named the PSL’s Proud Strong Learners of the Week.

DAndreJohnson“He’s a great leader, works hard and sets a good example,’’ Coach David Dixon said of Johnson. “He’s the engine that drives the team. He has a 3.5 grade point average and is just a great all-around example of what you want a student-athlete to be.”

Johnson, who is averaging 17 points, eight assists, four steals and three rebounds a game, has received almost a dozen Division 1 college scholarship offers. He plans to make a couple of campus visits in February before making his decision.

“After basketball I’d like to do something in business management,” Johnson said. “At first, I was looking at architectural design, but now I’m looking more toward the business aspect.”

Johnson has been taking care of business since stepping on the floor as a freshman.

In four years as a varsity starter, he has been at the forefront of Cass Tech building itself into a PSL West powerhouse. The Technicians entered Friday night with a 7-0 league and 11-1 overall record.

“It starts off with being a leader academically first and, secondly, on the court,’’ Johnson said. “As a player, my strengths are being a leader and a true point guard. I’ve mainly improved with my toughness and picking my spots on the court. I’m not really trying to force the issue. I’m just out there playing my game.”

Johnson said the Technicians can see the light at the end of the tunnel and feel good about their chances of making this a championship season to remember.

“We have a great chance of winning the city (PSL) championship,’’ he said. “Our first goal is being the west side champion. That’s always been the main goal. After that, we’re looking to win the city championship and then taking it on to Breslin (Center, site of the MHSAA state championship game).”

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys and girls athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and sponsored for the third year in a row by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
