DeShawn Sanders has become a leading man in a supporting role for Douglass High’s basketball team.

“DeShawn is probably our best player moving without the ball and he’s also my hardest-working player,’’ Hurricanes’ Coach Nkwane Young said. “He’s tough. He gets most of his shots by slashing and driving to the basket.”

DeShawnSandersDouglassPSLERWEEKSanders, a 6-2 junior forward, has been named the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week after averaging 16 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 rebounds a game prior to the holiday break.

The Hurricanes share first place in the PSL East and have depended on Sanders’ role as one of the keys to their early success.

“My game is defense and moving without the ball,’’ Sanders said. “Our guards run the offense and I feed off what they do. When I score, it’s usually off screens and curls and taking people off the dribble.”

Sanders, who started some games as a freshman before becoming a full-time starter last season, is part of a returning nucleus that’s minus only one graduated senior.

“Our chemistry is good because we all have known each other since we were freshmen,’’ Sanders said. “We’ve been getting better each year. Last year, I played a little timid. But I’ve learned from that. I’m more comfortable with my game and with the players we have.”

With still another year of high school remaining, Sanders has a 3.2 grade point average and is working toward earning a college scholarship. For now, he’s striving to help the Hurricanes reach their ultimate goal.

“All I want is to be city and state champions,’’ he said. “If we keep working hard, our team is good enough to make it happen.”

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys and girls athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and sponsored for the third year in a row by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
