Wayne Elementary School takes on a Service Learning Project to benefit Fire Station #58

Project update! On Friday, December 14, 2012, Ms. McDay’s 5th grade class at Wayne Elementary School collected and delivered tissue, paper towel, cleaning products and trash bags to Fire Station #58 as part of a service learning project on  the Core Democratic Value of Common Good. (December 4, 2012) – Recently Detroit firefighters have been in the media regarding a paper goods shortage that is occurring in many of the firehouses citywide.

Upon learning of this situation from her students, 5th grade teacher LaDawn McDay moved quickly to engage students in giving back to those who give so much to the community.

For the month of December, Anthony Wayne Elementary School’s administration, staff and students have adopted Fire Station #58 on Whittier and Lakepointe on Detroit’s east side.

The adoption will be the most recent Service Learning Project undertaken by the school and supported by Principal Pamela Askew.

Ms. McDay will work with the 5th grade students on this project by connecting the Social Studies curriculum with real life. Specifically, she will guide the students  on understanding and applying the Core Democratic Value of Common Good.

This will extend students’ understanding of helping others at home and school by including the community…this time our firefighters.
