Roberto Clemente’s family visits DPS Academy named in baseball legend’s honor

Roberto Clemente’s widow, Vera, and two sons, Roberto Jr. and Luis, paid a visit to Detroit Public Schools’ Roberto Clemente Academy on Monday to tour the school and participate in an assembly with the students.

In addition to the Academy’s students in grades PK-5, special guests included the players and coach from nearby Western International High School, the five-time defending Detroit Public School League baseball champions.

The Clemente family was in town to provide the national Roberto Clemente Humanitarian Award to the winning major league player during Sunday evening’s World Series Game at Comerica Park.
