Signature blue, red and white DPS lawn signs can be spotted in every Detroit neighborhood, but rarely do they appear in the middle of the expanse of a green front lawn as their political lawn sign “cousins” do.
Instead, parents and residents have increasingly made the sturdy 11×22 vertical signs a part of their semi-permanent landscapes…a piece of their garden architecture.
They can be found in perennial beds and surrounding light posts, in rubber tire makeshift flower pots and, in the case of apartment dwellers, in windows overlooking sidewalks and parking lots.
“Just as talking to a graduate of a Detroit public high school brings out feelings of that sentimental alumni pride, the signs, which many families have retained for multiple years, seem to themselves be making a statement of ongoing DPS pride,” said Steven Wasko, Assistant Superintendent of Community Relations with Detroit Public Schools.

Aimed at showcasing the best artistic and most prideful displays of the “I’m In” message, a new contest running through the end of this month encourages photo submissions of the Detroit Public Schools’ “I’m In” signs in a public setting, whether it is in the lawn, on the front porch, hanging from a car window, posted on a wall, or even in an office.
Winning entries will receive recognition and a chance to win an Amazon Kindle Fire as the grand prize.
The photos will be showcased on the district’s website and social media sites including the Official DPS Facebook Fan Page www.facebook.com/DetroitPublicSchoolsFanPage, and Detroit Public Schools Twitter feed, www.twitter.com/detroitk12.
Each of the district’s 100 schools has a bundle of lawn signs for distribution to parents, residents, community members and district employees who wish to take part in the contest.
Schools have been encouraged to distribute the signs during upcoming school events, open houses, and at Parent Resource Centers with a flyer detailing the contest.
