For the second year in a row, the Detroit Public School League Football Championship Game will be played in the electric atmosphere of Ford Field, the plush downtown home of the NFL’s Detroit Lions.

The game was originally scheduled for Oct. 19 at Northwestern High School, but that changed Wednesday with the announcement from Alvin L. Ward, Sr., DPS Office of Athletics executive director.

“We are pleased to say that we have a contract with Ford Field to play the PSL Championship Game on Friday, October 19 at 7 p.m.,’’  Ward said. “Please come out and support the Detroit Public School League.”

The two teams that arrive at Ford Field will be decided in Friday’s (Oct. 12) semifinals at Northwestern High. East English Village, in the school’s inaugural season, will face Cody at 5 p.m., and Cass Tech and King will renew their rivalry in the second game at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the semifinals are $5 and can be purchased at the gate. Students must have a DPS picture ID or be accompanied by a parent or guardian 21 years or older.

Cass Tech coach Thomas Wilcher was pleasantly surprised upon hearing that next week’s championship game will be played at Ford Field, the same field where his team won last year’s Division I state championship, the first in PSL history.

“That’s great news,’’ Wilcher said. “It gives the kids an opportunity to get back to familiar territory. It definitely adds excitement for the teams trying to get there.”

Last year’s event was the PSL’s first football championship at Ford Field since 2006. Crockett beat King for the Division 1 title and Douglass won the Division II title against Ford.

Under this year’s East-West division alignment, there will be only one PSL city champion. Admission to the championship game is $10 and can be purchased the day of the game at Ford Field.
