Cass Tech swept all three doubles matches and won two of the four singles matches to capture the 2012 Detroit Public School League boys’ tennis championship Monday at Barcus Tennis Center.
Coach Clarence Wynn’s Technicians scored 15 points to finish ahead of Mumford with 10, while Western, last year’s champion, placed third with nine points. Mumford had three points to place fourth, Northwestern scored two points for fifth and Cody and Osborn tied for sixth with one point each.
Sophomore Jeneral Huckleby led Cass Tech’s championship with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Mumford sophomore Franciscomary Umejiego at No. 1 singles. Cass Tech junior Dante Rionda won No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0 against Mumford senior John Edwards.
Western sophomore Antonio Tinoco earned the Cowboys’ lone title with a 7-6, 6-4 victory against Mumford senior Louismaria Umejiego at No. 3 singles. Mumford senior Jonathan Curry was the No. 4 singles champion with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Cass Tech freshman Brian Dockery.
In the doubles finals, Cass Tech’s tandem of freshmen Eric Miller and Jordan Gregory defeated Western juniors Bryan Medina and Carlos Olea 8-6, 6-4 at No. 1; Cass Tech senior LaJuan Walker II and freshman Jalen Vaughn beat Western senior Josue Gavia and freshman Sergio Munoz 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2; and Cass Tech senior Jaivon Davis and freshman Braxton Dockery won by default at No. 3.
