Cody High quarterback DaMarco Gulley turned a desperate situation into a dramatic finish last Friday in leading the Comets to a 28-22 overtime victory against Western.

Cody High’s DaMarco Gulley

Gulley, a 5-11, 180-pound senior, has been named the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week after engineering the Comets’ comeback from a 22-8 deficit in the fourth quarter. The victory earned Cody a spot in next week’s PSL semifinals.

“For three quarters we played terrible,’’ said Cody coach Calvin Norman. “But, late in the game, we played great, and Gulley was the reason.”

Gulley said he was inspired to finish strong after throwing a pair of interceptions that Western turned into a 16-0 lead in the second quarter. Just before halftime, he got it going with a 37-yard punt return for a touchdown.

“The coaches told me I wasn’t playing like my usual self, so I had to find it somewhere in my heart,’’ Gulley said. “If I’m not playing (well), my team’s not playing, so I had to click. That punt return got me going.”

With a major boost from the defense stopping Western on the Comets’ three-yard line, Gulley did the rest by throwing three TD passes, including a 48-yard pass to KaJuan Ocasio that sent the game into overtime, and another TD pass in overtime to Kenyon Bell that sealed the victory.

“Up to that point, we hadn’t moved the ball and done anything offensively,’’ Norman said. “We moved Gulley to the running back position just so he could move around a little and get into the groove. When we moved him back to quarterback, that’s when he got our passing game going.”

Gulley, who completed 4-of-8 passes for 83 yards, says his goal is to earn a college scholarship “and go pro.” He’s being looked at as a defensive back and has attracted interest from several schools, including Eastern Michigan and Grand Valley State.

“He’s probably one of the best players in the city because he can do everything,” Norman said. “He can play tailback, wide receiver, obviously quarterback, defensive back, safety, almost anywhere on the field. He’s just a fabulous kid.”

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys and girls athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and sponsored for the third year in a row by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators.
