The Detroit Lions announced today, September 18, 2012, Living for the City, a new philanthropic initiative focused on sustainable community health, wellness, and development.
Living for the City is a formal partnership with Playworks, Eastern Market, Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit, Hatch Detroit, and Lions Academy.
“Living for the City is a reflection of the Detroit Lions’ commitment to Detroit’s resurgence and our focus on areas of critical need,” said team president Tom Lewand at a press conference announcing the initiative. “Living for the City supports innovative citizen philanthropy and promotes personal and community wellbeing. The Detroit Lions organization is excited for the potential that Living for the City offers for making a real difference in this community that we all call home.”
Living for the City is kicking off with four programs:
- Lunch with the Lions, a program that provides vouchers for fresh foods from Eastern Market and cooking lessons at Ford Field to students at the Detroit Lions Academy and Detroit Public Schools. Lunch with the Lions will be held every Tuesday, September 25 – October 30.
- Lions Play 60, a program in partnership with Playworks Detroit, encourages play as a way to help kids make the right choices when it comes to respecting and including others. During the school year, trained program coordinators will work with students at the Detroit Lions Academy and Detroit Public Schools.
- Dollars for Jobs: Pass it Forward campaign, in collaboration with Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit, encourages community giving to provide training and employment opportunities for those in need. The Dollars for Jobs campaign runs through the month of September and features envelopes that can be passed from person to person to contribute to fighting unemployment in Detroit.
- Hatch Detroit will work with Detroit neighborhoods that are a critical component of the revitalization of the region to shine a spotlight on entrepreneurs who contribute to the community, keep their surrounding areas safe and clean, and are an asset to the neighborhood and its growth.
As part of Living for the City, additional partner collaborations are planned throughout the year, including Eastern Market having space at Ford Field where vendors can sell fresh produce to Lions fans and Lions Play 60 offering pre-game, on-field events for kids.
