The DPS Office of Mathematics Education has partnered with West Point Academy, National Association of Black Engineers, and University of Detroit Mercy to bring several STEM Summer camps together.
The West Point STEM camp was held at U of D Jesuit High School from June 19-22, 2012. Students had the opportunity to participate in hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics activities taught by West Point faculty and cadet mentors. There were two 2-day sessions that allowed students to use computer software to design, build and test a bridge. Students also built a robot that was able to perform several tasks.
The two camps serviced 29 DPS students from across the district. Among the schools represented were: Bates Academy, Ann Arbor Trail, Spain and Burton International.
“Many parents expressed appreciation for their children having the opportunity to experience engineering in a fun and engaging atmosphere. West Point is looking to return next summer,” said Dr. Irene Norde, DPS Executive Director of the Office of Mathematics Education and President of the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Summer Engineering Experiences for Kids (SEEK)
The SEEK Camp is a partnership with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) to offer an engaging introduction to engineering for our students. This 3-week camp will be held at Bates Academy from July 16 through August 3, 2012 where 40-50 collegiate mentors will provide the instruction. The mentors are undergraduate engineering and/or mathematics students.
There are 255 students from twenty-six DPS schools registered for the camp; ninety (90) third graders, ninety-eight (98) fourth graders and sixty-eight (68) fifth graders. Students attending are coming from the following schools: Academy of the Americas, Ann Arbor Trail, Bagley, Bates, Bethune, Bow, Ronald Brown, Burton, Chrysler, Dixon, FLISC, Golightly, Gompers, JR King, Ludington, MacDowell, Marquette, Murphy, Noble, Oakman, Pasteur, Robeson-Malcolm X, Schulze, Brenda Scott, Thirkell, and Charles Wright.
University of Detroit Mercy Pre-College Engineering Camps
Through the generosity of the UDM Pre-College Programs Office, scholarships were made available for three summer engineering camps. These camps focus on various areas of engineering and are for high school students in grades 9 – 12. They are one and two-week camps that run during July and August. One camp will allow students to explore Transportation Engineering while the other focuses on Mechanical Engineering and will bring in instructors from Georgia Institute of Technology. There are eleven (11) Cass Tech students and three (3) from Davis Aerospace who will take advantage of this incredible opportunity.
