Bennett Elementary students enjoyed a recent “Recess” with Mayor Bing

Bennett Elementary students loved the opportunity to have “Recess” with Mayor Bing on June 7.

“Our students were very excited to see the Mayor,” said Judy Hesse. “Many of our students have never seen someone as important as Mayor Bing.  They were very excited and found the mayor to be an inspiration.  Playworks is a vital part of our school and we were so happy to be included in the celebration of Community, Fair Play, and Healthy Play.”

According to a news release from the City, the Detroit Department of Health & Wellness Promotion (DHWP) and Playworks Detroit hosted Detroit Recess Day with Mayor Dave Bing and 200 fourth grade students at Campus Martius Park on Thursday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  The goal of Playworks Detroit is to partner with schools in the Detroit area to transform recess into an active, fun, and positive part of the school day.

“This is a great program, because it’s vital that children stay physically active, not only at recess but also after school,” said Mayor Bing.

At the event, students learned how to play a range of games such as hopscotch, four square, jump rope and more by trained Playworks Detroit coaches.  The purpose of the event was to launch a movement that helps students learn how to play and become physically active.  The emphasis was on having fun!
