Detroit Public Schools on Friday, June 1 honored its wonderful Volunteer Reading Corps and Volunteer Business Corps through a special recognition event at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
More than 130 volunteers attended this informal event which included light refreshments and pastries in the Kresge Court. Guests also had an opportunity to see the 75th Annual DPS Student Art Exhibition on display in a nearby gallery before it closes on June 3. Admission to the museum and parking were free.
“We at DPS are always heartened to know that, in addition to our hard-working teachers, principals and staff, we have a Corps of community support through our Volunteer Reading Corps, which is more than 1,000 members strong, and our Volunteer Business Corps, which has nearly 130 business partners and organizations,” Karen Ridgeway, Superintendent of Academics told the assembled volunteers. “You are greatly appreciated. And your impact is essential.”
This event was sponsored by the Detroit Public Schools Foundation with generous support from Sodexo, Safeway Transportation and the Detroit Institute of Arts.
