King High School’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams each were the recipients of $500 checks from the Public School League Alumni Sports Association, Inc., at a brief presentation ceremony Tuesday in the school’s media center.

“We’re making this donation not only because they’re winners, but we want to let them know we care,” said Mitchell Aclise, president of the alumni group. “We’re always ready to try and assist DPS students in their positive endeavors.”

King’s boys’ and girls’ teams both beat Pershing to sweep the 2011-12 PSL basketball championships.

Head coaches Pierre Brooks and William Winfield were joined by King High principal Dr. Deborah Jenkins, athletic coordinator Gerald Weatherspoon and six student-athletes in accepting the award. Winfield said his Lady Crusaders will use the funds to attend a camp this summer in Chicago and to compete this summer at St. Cecilia. Brooks said the money will help his Crusaders buy much-needed equipment, such as basketballs and practice gear.

“Our young student-athletes are very deserving and we’re very thankful to the PSL Alumni Association for this generous donation,” Weatherspoon said.
