Mumford High’s Vorri Zanders is rounding back into form after a hamstring injury last spring dealt a setback to her status as one of the Detroit Public School League’s top middle distance runners.
“Vorri is having a difficult senior year, but she seems like she’s making her way back,’’ Mustangs’ track coach Marc Parker said of Zanders, the PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week. “She ran a good race out here in the 400 and 800 (Tuesday). The rest of it is just practice and getting ready.”
Zanders is primed to be a double champion again after winning the 1600 and 3200 as a sophomore and the 800 and 1600 as a junior.
“I feel like this is my senior year, and so I’m going to try to be as best as I can after running four years in high school,’’ she said. “My preparation hasn’t been the same this year because of the injury to my hamstring. But I’ll just keep working hard and stay dedicated and humble.”
A student with a 3.8 grade point average, Zanders figures to earn a scholarship and compete at a historically black college. She plans to major in Pre-Med with a goal of becoming an obstetric gynecologist.
“Even without track, Vorri can do just about whatever she wants to do and be successful,” Parker said. “She’s a very bright young lady and has unlimited possibilities.”
