March is Reading Month, and schools across DPS are celebrating with special activities to encourage a love of reading.
At Neinas Elementary School, hundreds of students came to school in their pajamas to participate in a “Snuggle Up With A Good Book” event on March 23, 2012.
Groups of readers are competing to read as many different genres as possible. Students have read books from genres including: Traditional Literature, Realistic Fiction, Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Mystery, Informational, Biography, and Poetry.
A tent was set up in one classroom so Guest Reading Buddies could read their favorite childhood books to small groups of children. State Rep. Rashida Tlaib spoke to a group of students about the importance of reading. Tlaib, who is a product of DPS, said she regularly visits schools within her district to read to students because she knows first-hand the impact of regular reading.
“I didn’t speak English when I first started school,” Tlaib said. “I realized that when I fell in love with reading, that’s when I became better in all of my subjects.”
