In a thriller of epic proportions, King High staved off a frantic comeback effort by Pershing High to win the Class A regional girls’ basketball championship Thursday night at Warren Cousino High School.
Coach William Winfield’s Lady Crusaders led 49-37 with 2:41 left in the game when Coach Shawn Hill’s Doughgirls climbed within striking distance behind senior Caprice Dennis, who scored 12 of her team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter.
King’s 54-53 victory wasn’t secured until Pershing’s Nijzah Hill’s desperation shot from the backcourt careened off the rim as time expired.
King was led by junior guard Laquita Hart’s 17 points, while Hill added 16 points for Pershing.
The victory advanced King (22-3) into Tuesday’s 5:3 p.m. state quarterfinals game against Inkster (19-4) at University of Detroit Mercy’s Calihan Hall. Pershing ends the season with a 21-4 record.
