Lady Crusaders, Doughgirls in rubber match for Class A regional title

For the third time this season, the Detroit Public School League’s top two girls’ basketball teams will collide Thursday when King High (20-3) meets Pershing High (20-3) in the Class A regional finals at Warren Cousino High School.

Pershing High's Nijzah Hill played tough defense in 68-47 semifinal victory

Both teams advanced with regional semifinal victories Tuesday as Coach Shawn Hill’s Pershing Doughgirls jumped out to a big lead and defeated Livonia Ladywood 68-47. Coach William Winfield’s King Lady Crusaders got off to a sluggish start but came from behind to eliminate Warren Cousino 49-43.
King upset Pershing 50-47 in the PSL championship game Feb. 16 at U-D’s Calihan Hall, avenging a 58-53 loss on Pershing’s home floor in January.

King High's Antania Hayes helped lead comeback against Cousino

This time, the winner advances into next week’s state quarterfinals while there’s no tomorrow for the loser. Tip-off time for Thursday’s game is 7 p.m.
