The parent workshops, which include information on how extra-curricular activities can help raise student achievement, will be accompanied by a tailgate theme in the Parent Resource Centers
Detroit Public Schools will hold “Coaching your Child to Win” workshops in Parent Resource Centers Dec. 5-9 in honor of Cass Tech’s historic win as the first-ever Detroit Public School League football team to a state title for the largest-schools’ No. 1 division.
Parent Workshop themes include:
- Tailgate with us! Coaching your kid to win!
- Top 10 benefits of being involved in sports and extra- curricular activities
- Building character, self esteem, and team work
The Parent Resource Centers will have cake, chicken wings, popcorn, chips and salsa. As part of a monthly giveaway, parents who attend one or more workshops are entered in a raffle for a $50 gift card.
The workshops are one facet of DPS’ broad Parent and Community Engagement initiatives, which are geared to helping us increase parent involvement. The initiative includes training camps that focus on parenting, fun and engaging workshops and much more. Detroit Public Schools, through a performance-driven partnership with Detroit Parent Network, operates eight parent resource centers that are comfortable spaces for parents and guardians to meet. The centers, which are geographically placed across the city, provide training and resources to parents of DPS students, helping them be involved in their children’s education. This Title I initiative was developed with input from parents and guardians, community leaders and the Detroit Parent Network. It is funded, in part, with a three-year $1.2 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
