Rare elementary alumni organization returned to Detroit school with career focus

Pasteur Elementary School has a database of more than 1,300 alumni and 231 active alumni members from U.S., Canada, Israel and the United Arab Emirates

Many DPS high schools have active alumni groups but Pasteur Elementary is one of only a handful of public elementary schools with organized and active alumni participation. The Pasteur Elementary Alumni Foundation dates back to 1996 with a group from the 1962 eighth grade class who bumped into each other at a grocery store, and the group blossomed from there. Many shared the same librarian, art and gym teachers.

The group now has a database has over 1,300 alumni who attended the school since 1939 and 231 active members in the alumni organization, with members from the U.S., Canada, Israel and the United Arab Emirates. They regular participate in activities at the school.

On Nov. 17, Pasteur, along with the Pasteur Elementary Alumni Foundation, held a Career Day for current students. Invited speakers included Judge Daniel Van Antwerp and Agnes Van Antwerp, Pasteur’s art teacher from the 1950’s and 1960’s, and a representative from Selfridge Air National Guard Base doing a robotics demonstration.
