Students, parents, teachers, staff and community members of Marcus Garvey Academy celebrated the completion of their brand new $2.1 million, Harambee Center addition that is a new 160,745-square-foot gathering space for the school’s African-centered curriculum.

A completely flexible space that can be secured from the rest of the school for use after hours, the Harambee Center provides a welcoming home for student gatherings by day, the lunch room for the middle school students at noon, as well as ample accommodation for events for parents and the community on evenings and weekends. The space features a new audio visual and security system, a new parking lot with access control, and new landscaping.

Marcus Garvey one of nine Detroit Public Schools that opened to students in September in the largest grand opening of facilities in one of the city’s largest construction projects to build and renovate DPS facilities with voter-approved $500.5 million Proposal S dollars.
