Detroit Public School League champion Cass Tech and runner-up Renaissance both reached the end of their road Tuesday night at Warren Cousino High School in the Class A regional semifinals of the Michigan High School Athletic Association girls’ volleyball state tournament.
With the winners advancing to Thursday’s 7 p.m. regional championship game, Livonia Stevenson defeated Renaissance 3-0 in the best-of-five by scores of 25-9, 25-9, 25-12. Cass Tech lost 3-1 against Sterling Heights by scores of 25-14, 25-20, 23-25 and 28-26.
“Our goal is always to win our league, and we achieved that with the East Division and City championship,’’ said Coach Ed Tomlin, whose Lady Technicians finished the season 22-16-4. “We would have liked to have done better in the state, but it was a good season. The girls worked hard and had plenty of fun.”
“We had a successful season,’’ said Coach Louis Mitchell, whose Lady Phoenix finished with a 29-10-3 record. “Unfortunately, we lost the City championship, but we had a great core of kids and were able to win the second district championship in my (20-year) tenure. We’re looking forward to the future. We have a great junior varsity program that’s won the championship the last two years. We’re looking forward to those players filling some of the slots vacated by our seniors.”
