Cass Tech won the Detroit Public School League girls’ volleyball championship for the second year in a row Tuesday night by defeating Renaissance in four games at Western International High School.
Coach Ed Tomlin’s Lady Technicians closed out the best-of-five match with a 25-22 victory after winning the first two games 25-12 and 25-11. Renaissance won the third game 25-15, but Coach Louis Mitchell’s Lady Phoenix squad was unable to seize the momentum.
“It was a tough battle,’’ Tomlin said. “It was Renaissance and Cass (in the finals) for the fifth or sixth consecutive year. Our girls came together. We didn’t want it to go five (games). Our goal was to get it done in three or four, and we did it.”
King defeated Pershing 25-17, 25-18, 25-20 in the consolation game to take third place in the league.
