P.O.P. (Pencil on Paper) Time© is a creative quick-write where students write on a given topic for 15 minutes. Each topic of the day is accompanied by a creative, mental picture-painting introduction that helps to stir creativity in young writers. This introduction is announced daily on the school PA system. Students have an opportunity to submit their best writing in order to compete for TOP POPPER of the MONTH. This year, four will be selected each month and they will edit and publish their writings to be showcased on the school’s P.O.P. Time© bulletin board. Also, each showcased student is given a personalized P.O.P. Time© certificate, a restaurant gift card and their picture posted with their writing.
Last but not least, P.O.P. Time© has an end of the year culminating program called the “POPTASTIC COMPETITION,” where the most creative writers read and recite their poems to a panel of distinguished judges. The 1st Place winner from each participating grade level becomes known as MVP-Most Valuable Popper. The P.O.P. Time© best practice was created by Literacy Coach, Calli Hayes.
