Western High won seven of the eight championship matches to capture the 2011 Detroit Public School League boys’ tennis championship Monday at Barcus Tennis Center.
The league title was Cowboys’ seventh in boys’ tennis under Coach Stella Obi and was led by senior Enrique Mendez who defeated Cass Tech’s Evin Dixon 6-1, 6-3 to win No. 1 singles.
With 20 points, Western’s other winners included Rogelio Castro, who defeated Cass Tech freshman Jeneral Huckleby at No. 2 singles; James Hitch, who defeated Cass Tech at No. 3 singles; Axel Montes, a winner by default against Southwestern’s Xavier Warren at No. 4 singles; Antonio Tinaco and Johnathan Angeles, who defeated Cass Tech’s Dorian Corbett and Austin Moore 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles; Daniel Mireles and Keith Valentine, who won by default at No. 3 doubles; and Edgar Ramirez and Nicolas Perez, a default winner at No. 4 doubles.
Cass Tech’s No. 1 doubles team of Justin Wright and Lamar Weir were the only winners to break Western’s stronghold, defeating the Cowboys’ Alberto Mercado and Victor Aldana 6-1, 6-0.
Cass Tech placed second in the team standings with 11 points followed by Southwestern 3, Mumford and Osborn with 2 each, and King, Ford and Northwestern each with 1.
