Crockett High’s strategy last Friday night was to apply defensive pressure to Cass Tech’s freshman quarterback, and Chris McCord followed the plan to the hilt.

“I was trying to get as many sacks as I could,’’ said McCord, the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week. “That was probably my best game I ever played. I was just focused on beating Cass.”

McCord, a 6-0, 190-pound senior defensive end, did his part with eight tackles, including four QB sacks, and three forced fumbles in the Rockets’ 7-0 victory that moved them into a three-way tie for first place in the PSL Division 1 football standings.

“Chris is a great player and he gave maximum effort on Friday,’’ Crockett coach Rod Oden said. “Knowing that Cass’ quarterback was a freshman, our objective was to put some heat on the young fellow and make him throw under duress.  Chris played within the scheme of the defense and beat his man on every play.”

Although he was preceded by two brothers who played at Crockett, McCord is in his first season with the Rockets after transferring from Warren Cousino last January. “He’s one of the kids leaving the suburbs to come back to DPS,’’ Oden said.

“He’s good kid and a humble kid. He has been excelling ever since he made the transition from linebacker to defensive end.”

McCord hopes to continue playing football in college. He’s gotten some looks from Division 2 schools and says PSL competition is preparing him well to advance to the next level. “I like it a lot out here,’’ he said. “It’s a lot faster, harder-hitting and bigger guys.”

Having talked with his teammates about the sound whipping they took in last year’s PSL championship game, McCord said he had extra motivation against Cass.

“We were determined not to let that happen again,” he said. “That’s why I went out there and played my heart out.”
