A beaming crowd of honorees, parents and school personnel saw Cass Tech High’s football team and Renaissance High’s 6-2 senior forward Alexis Harris named the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learners of the Year for boys’ and girls’ athletics, respectively, at a ceremony Thursday in the DPS Welcome Center.
The inaugural event, sponsored by McDonald’s, was emceed by Daryl Weaver, the public address “voice of the PSL,” and a video presentation featured photos of the 58 Proud Strong Learners of the Week honorees and action photos of PSL competition during an exciting 2010-2011 athletic school year.
Robert Bobb, the school district’s outgoing Emergency Manager, and Tyrone Winfrey, DPS Board of Education Vice President, offered congratulatory remarks to the honorees and presented awards.
Alvin Ward, DPS Adminstrator of Athletics, thanked McDonald’s for its sponsorship. Savarior Service, the McDonald’s owner-operator on W. Grand Blvd., expressed support and praise for the PSL athletic program and its standout athletes.
Chuck Johnson, DPS Sports Information Director and founder of the event, said he hopes the Proud Strong Learners Awards becomes increasingly meaningful to the honorees when it grows bigger and better as an annual event.
