The inaugural Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learners of the Year Awards, sponsored by McDonald’s, will be held Thursday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Detroit Public Schools Welcome Center, 7320 Second Ave., Detroit 48202.

This recognition program will honor the PSL’s top athletic performers who were selected Proud Strong Learners of the Week during the 2010-11 school year as nominated by their coaches.

The 59 weekly honorees include 56 talented scholar-athletes and three premier PSL teams, from which the Proud Strong Learners of the Year will be announced for girls’ athletics and for boys’ athletics.

The honorees range from Cass Tech’s 9-0 regular-season, state semifinalist football team, to Western International’s Todd Phelps, who pitched the first perfect game in Comerica Park history in the PSL baseball championship game, to Cass Tech’s Kyra Jefferson, who was honored as a league-champion swimmer and recently won the 100 meters and 200 meters in the state Division 1 track championships, to All-City, All-State forward Alexis Harris of Class A girls’ basketball state finalist Renaissance High, to Southeastern High’s boys’ basketball team, which reached the state Class A finals for the first time in 85 years with a school-record 23 victories.

“As an involved community partner, McDonald’s fully supports the effort to recognize and pay tribute to the outstanding scholar-athletes within the Detroit Public School League,’’ said Savarior Service, a Detroit-based McDonald’s owner-operator. “We are honored to be a part of this special event and we look forward to continuing our sponsorship of the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learners of the Year Awards in 2011-2012.”

The honorees, their families and school supporters are invited to Thursday’s program and media coverage is encouraged.
