The Detroit Public Schools Volunteer Business Corps/B.O.L.D. Program has surpassed its goal of finding one business or community partner for each of the district’s 141 schools. The new corps members will work with their school partners to improve academic achievement and support the district’s rigorous five-year academic plan.
To date, close to 200 entities have stepped forward to partner with schools, including recent signups from Sam’s Club, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, DTE Energy and Detroit Chassis. Other companies that have signed up include Chase and PNC banks, Office Depot, Gardner-White Furniture and Tapper’s Diamonds and Fine Jewelry. Some organizations have not been a good fit for schools, leaving about 150 that will be paired with schools before the end of the academic year.
“This continues to be a game-changing time for corporate and volunteer support for our schools,” said DPS Assistant Superintendent for Community Relations Steven Wasko. “Programs like this one, the Reading Corps and the DPS Foundation early gifts ultimately are responding to pent-up demand on the part of many seeking to be part of DPS’ current transformation.”
About 60 companies or organizations have sent representatives to training sessions over the last four weeks in preparation for their partnerships. The next training session will be held from 8-9:30 a.m. Wednesday March 10, 2011, at the Doubletree Fort Shelby Hotel, 525 W. Lafayette Blvd., Detroit. Seating is limited and RSVPs are requested via e-mail to email@example.com or by calling (313) 870-3799. Light refreshments will be provided.
To sign up or to learn more, call (313) 870-3799, email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit http://detroitk12.org/businesscorps.
