Unbeaten Pershing High leads girls’ field into today’s "Big D" quarterfinals

Unbeaten Pershing High’s Doughgirls are shaping up as the class of the field in the Detroit Public School League Big D girls’ basketball tournament, which picks up today (Wednesday, Feb. 9) with the East quarterfinals at Osborn High School and the West quarterfinals at Central High.
In the East, King collides with Southeastern at 4 p.m. followed by Pershing against Central at 5:30 p.m. In the West, Mumford meets Cass Tech at 4 p.m. and Cody takes on Renaissance at 5:30 p.m.
Osborn High will host the girls’ semifinals Monday, Feb. 14 at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The girls’ tournament culminates with the 5 p.m. consolation game and 7:30 p.m. championship game Thursday, Feb. 17 at Renaissance High.
In boys’ Big D second-round games Tuesday, Douglass defeated Pershing 82-68, Southeastern beat Osborn 67-38, King ousted Denby 85-75 and Crockett got past Central 74-52 in the East Division. In the West Division, Mumford beat Renaissance at the buzzer 52-50, Cody defeated CMA 71-40, Ford dumped Southwestern 86-72 and Cass Tech beat Northwestern 46-32.
The boys’ tourmament resumes with quarterfinal games Friday. In East games at Osborn High School, Douglass plays King at 4 p.m. and Crockett meets league unbeaten Southeastern at 5:30 p.m. In West games at Renaissance High School, Mumford plays Ford at 4 p.m. and Cass plays league unbeaten Cody at 5:30 p.m.
Cass Tech High School will host the boys’ Big D semifinals Tuesday Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The tournament culminates Friday, Feb. 18 with the 5 p.m. consolation game and 7:30 p.m. championship game, also at Cass Tech High.
