The Detroit Lions, Compuware and the Detroit Convention and Visitors Bureau are among the most recent organizations to commit to adopting schools under the Detroit Public Schools Volunteer Business Corps/B.O.L.D. program, which works to improve academic achievement and support the district’s rigorous five-year academic plan.

More than 100 companies and organizations of varying sizes attended a kickoff for the program on Thursday, including Tapper’s Jewelry and Gardner-White Furniture, which have committed $10,000 each to the program.

The first training session for volunteers in the program will be held from 8-9:30 a.m. Friday February 4, 2011 at the Michigan State University-Detroit Center, 3408 Woodward. Seating is limited and RSVPs are requested via e-mail to businesscorps@detroitk12.org or by calling (313) 870-3799. Parking and light refreshments will be provided.

Training will also take place from 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday, February 10 and 8-9:30 a.m. Friday, February 11. Fingerprinting for volunteers will be offered at all training sessions at a cost of $60, payable in money order, cashier’s check or business check. In some cases, the fee may be waived for those who cannot pay it.

To sign up or to learn more, call (313) 870-3799, email businesscorps@detroitk12.org or visit http://detroitk12.org/businesscorps.
