NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to premiere "On the Shoulders of Giants" Wednesday at Renaissance High

Renaissance High will host a question and answer session with National Basketball Association legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar after the airing Wednesday of “On the Shoulders of Giants,” a documentary film that highlights the Harlem Renaissance.
The program will take place Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., before a Renaissance student audience and will be live-streamed via the internet. The film is produced by Abdul-Jabbar’s Skyhook Foundation and examines important events in U.S. history between the 1920s and 1930s. An accompanying study guide will allow students to learn about the Harlem Renaissance, an important period of cultural and social advancement and artistic expression for African-Americans.
“Our high school social studies students will have the opportunity to view the film, use the study guide and engage in a satellite conversation with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and notable scholars,” said Sheryl Jones, director of the Detroit Public Schools’ Office of History, Society and Culture.
“We’re pleased that Mr. Abdul-Jabbar and his foundation chose Renaissance High and the Detroit Public Schools as a site to premier this film. The film and study guide provide an excellent means for reinforcing social studies lessons from this very important era in United States history.”
