Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School is inviting community organizations and schools to the Second Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy March, which will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, January 17, 2011, at the school, 3200 E. Lafayette.

The event will honor the legacy of the legendary civil rights leader through the theme “Educating the Nation . The Legacy is Alive.”

The inaugural march last year attracted more than 3,000 participants, said Principal Dr. Deborah Jenkins. This year the event is expected to grow and include organized labor, Congressman John Conyers, members of the Detroit City Council and Mayor’s Office, Cass, Crockett and Central high schools and other DPS schools, Eastern High alumni and the Freemasons.

Organizations are invited to bring banners and/or wear identifying colors to march as a group. For those who cannot march, the school will host a program and exhibits of civil rights artifacts. Light refreshments will be served.

Additional information on the route, program and logistics will be released in early January. To sign up or receive more information, please contact Karinda L. Washington at (313) 355-4154.
