Pershing High alum Steve Smith to help dedicate school’s new scoreboard

Pershing High alum Steve Smith and the Pershing High Alumni Association will formally unveil a new scoreboard in the school’s Steve Smith Gymnasium Thursday at 2 p.m. The media is invited.
Smith, who played basketball at Michigan State University and starred in the NBA after graduating from Pershing, will be present to help dedicate the new scoreboard to his former high school coach Johnny Goston.
Smith maintains close ties to his alma mater. He sponsors an annual college scholarship for Pershing students and contributed $4,000 to help the Pershing alumni reach a fund-raising goal of $10,500 for the new scoreboard. The Pershing gym was named in Smith’s honor in 2001.
In conjunction with the unveiling ceremony, the Pershing alumni group is sponsoring a basketball game featuring former team members. Admission is $5.
