Spain middle school students to hear military academy boxers; GM exec to donate $10,000 to DPS Foundation

An audience of 200 sixth-eighth grade students at Spain Elementary-Middle School will assemble Friday from 11:30 a.m.-12 noon to hear from boxers representing the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Co.

The boxers, who are being hosted by the Detroit Athletic Club, where they will compete Friday evening in the Chuck Davey Boxing Classic, will share stories with Spain’s students about boxing and other experiences that led them to their prestigious academies and helped shape their success.

General Motors Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson, a Naval Academy graduate, will attend and make a $10,000 donation to the Detroit Public Schools Foundation in support of Detroit Public School League athletics.

“I know my life was forever changed through my academy experience, and boxing was a part of that,” Akerson said. “I am very proud of these cadets and want General Motors to help tomorrow’s leaders develop into the best people they can be.”

Chacona Johnson, CEO of the Detroit Public Schools Foundation, said: “This gift is important because we recognize that students develop life-long transferable lessons such as discipline, time management, leadership and team-building skills through school athletic activities, which will be supported by this donation.”
