Cass Tech, King can’t afford a slipup heading into next Friday’s showdown

The challenge for Cass Tech High’s and King High’s football teams Friday is to not get caught napping.
With their teams on a collision course toward a Detroit Public School League showdown next Friday (Sept. 24, 7:30 p.m.) at King High School, Coach Thomas Wilcher’s Technicians (3-0) and Coach Dale Harvel’s Crusaders (3-0) can preserve the luster of that game by keeping their unbeaten records intact.
That’s not a given for either team as Cass Tech hosts unbeaten Southeastern (2-0) and King visits Renaissance (2-1) in 4 p.m. games Friday, with both Coach Anthony Elliott’s Jungaleers and Coach Antonio Watts’ Phoenix certain to be in an upset frame of mind.
In other 4 p.m. games Friday, unbeaten Crockett (3-0) visits Ford (1-2); Southwestern (1-2) visits Central (2-1); Finney (1-2) visits Pershing (1-2); Douglass (2-1) visits Kettering (0-3); and Osborn (0-2) visits Western (1-2) at Clark Park. The PSL Game of the Week features a doubleheader at King High School as Northwestern (0-3) goes against Cody (2-1) at 5 p.m. followed by Denby (0-3) against Mumford (1-2) at 7:30 p.m.
Under the PSL’s four-division format, the current league standings are (division record in parenthesis): Division I – Cass Tech (1-0), King (1-0), Southeastern (0-0), Denby (0-1), Mumford (0-1); Division II – Crockett (1-0), Renaissance (1-0), Northwestern (0-0), Cody (0-1), Ford (0-1); Division III – Central (0-0), Douglass (0-0), Osborn (0-0), Pershing (0-0); Division IV – Finney (0-0), Kettering (0-0), Southwestern (0-0), Western (0-0).
