Emerson Elementary students receive donated backpacks

Emerson Elementary’s 700-plus students each were greeted on their first day of school Tuesday with new supplies-filled backpacks, courtesy of a donation from Discovery Education. “It means the world to us,” said Emerson principal Brenda Carethers. “This gift from Discovery Education is in recognition of our students’ achievements and supports our curriculum and instruction as well as the families whose children attend Emerson. We’re very gratified that Emerson was the only school in the midwest to be selected for this donation.”

At a school assembly attended by all Emerson K-8 students, Carethers and Sherry Ulery, deputy chief of Academic Affairs for Detroit Public Schools, accepted the backpack donation from Coni Rechner, vice president of Discovery Education
