Detroit Public Schools has placed 24 recently closed school buildings up for sale or lease in an effort to ward off blight by giving churches, community groups and other entities the opportunity to launch ventures in city neighborhoods.

Collectively, the buildings sit on more than 90 acres of land. They include the Bethune Early Childhood Center, 13001 Fenkell, which was built in 1974, the building that housed Westside Alternative High School, 1851 W. Grand Blvd., and the 17.6-acre Cooley High School property, 15055 Hubbell, which has a former St. John Health medical facility attached to it.

While the days of $1 leases are over, the district will consider flexible terms and unique structures, including leases with the option to buy, said Tammy Deane, manager of the district’s real estate department.

“We want to make sure the buildings don’t sit vacant and bring blight into neighborhoods.” Deane said. “Buyers should make an offer, and all reasonable offers will be considered.”

The revenue generated from the sales and leases goes into the general fund, helping to reduce the district’s deficit. In addition to trimming the deficit, the sales help to cut maintenance costs.

The DPS Real Estate Department has generated more than $5 million in sales and leases since March 2009, when Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb changed the direction of the office. No district property had been sold or leased in the 12 months prior to him taking office, and one-third of the tenants were in arrears.

In addition to the new properties, 57 buildings and 15 parcels of vacant land that were previously offered are still for sale. For information on all the properties, visit the district’s real estate web site at www.detroitk12.org/admin/operations/real_estate/ or call (313) 873-6170.
