Renaissance extends girls’ softball reign

Renaissance High extended its Detroit Public School League girls’ softball reign to six years in a row with a 4-1 victory May 21 against Cass Tech before a spirited crowd of more than 300 at the University of Detroit Mercy.

Coach Garrard Taylor’s Phoenix capped an unbeaten league season (12-0) behind sophomore pitcher Kayla Banks, who struck out 10 and nailed down the victory after Cass put two runners on base with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Senior catcher Kemit Hoye was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI and junior second baseman Cassandra Nelson had a double and scored a run to lead Renaissance’s balanced seven-hit attack.
