297 seniors with 3.5 GPAs or above to be honored at Excellence Awards on May 12

Detroit Public Schools will honor the district’s top graduates at the 26th annual Superintendent’s Excellence Awards Banquet at 6 p.m. May 12 in the Riverview Ballroom at Cobo Center.

The 297 honorees represent the top 3 percent of the graduating class. They include eight Gates Millennium Scholarship winners, 16 students who earned all A’s throughout high school and one senior who has already made her mark on the music world by playing at Carnegie Hall.

The students are bound for institutions ranging from Princeton University to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, a selection of historically Black colleges and universities, and schools closer to home like Wayne State University and the University of Michigan.

All the students maintained grade point averages of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale for seven consecutive semesters. DPS will also recognize the students’ parents/guardians and one educator who has made a significant impact on the academic achievement of each honoree.

This is the first year the district has chosen to partner with the Michigan Chronicle in honoring its best students. The June 9 issue of the Chronicle will feature all the honorees and a special photo of the graduates. The newspaper also will make a donation to DPS Foundation to be used for scholarships.
