Mann Elementary pays tribute to slain, wounded police officers

Mann Elementary students will visit Detroit Police Department Eastern District headquarters (11187 Gratiot Ave.) at 1 p.m. Friday to present cards and letters they’ve written in tribute to slain police officer Brian Huff and the four officers who were wounded earlier this week.
More than 300 pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students at Mann participated in a school-wide writing campaign that was initiated by teachers Pam Namyslowski and Julie Beatty with the help of teacher Piper Herbert, whose husband is a Detroit police lieutenant assigned to the Downtown district.
Six students were chosen to represent the school and will be transported by police van to present all the cards and letters to Detroit Police Eastern District Commander Steve Dolunt.
Huff, 42, was killed and four officers were wounded in the line of duty early Monday morning after responding to a report of gunshots at a vacant house where neighbors said drugs were sold.
