DFCU Financial of Dearborn has committed $10,000 to Detroit Public Schools’ Volunteer Reading Corps, an initiative to tutor children in reading and help reach DPS’ goal to have every third-grader read at grade level or above by 2015.
The contribution is the first major monetary donation to the Reading Corps. Other sponsors have supported the program through in-kind services.
“We are grateful for the tremendous support of DFCU Financial for its monetary contribution and to its employees for volunteering to tutor in the Reading Corps,” said Robert Bobb, the district’s Emergency Financial Manager. “Their support underscores how important it is to our community partners to build a strong academic program throughout Detroit Public Schools.”
The DFCU funds will be used to pay for tutor training and materials.
“We are pleased to be of assistance in this critically important Detroit Public Schools initiative,” said Mark Shobe, president and CEO of DFCU Financial. “As an organization we have centered our philanthropic efforts on public school system education in the communities that we serve. A proper education is fundamental to a prosperous future – a journey that begins with learning how to read.”
Chacona Johnson, president and CEO of the Detroit Public Schools Foundation, praised DFCU Financial and said other donations for the Reading Corps are being accepted online.
“The Detroit Public Schools Foundation was pleased to work with DFCU Financial in generating support for the Detroit Public Schools Reading Corps, and commends DFCU Financial for stepping up to support the Reading Corps financially,” said Johnson.
“It is refreshing to see the greater Detroit community coming together to donate time and money to help our children learn to read,” Johnson said. “We are grateful to DFCU Financial and welcome others who wish to contribute to send checks payable to the Detroit Public Schools Foundation, 18th Floor, Fisher Building, 3011 W. Grand Blvd., Detroit, MI 48202, or contribute online at www.detroitpsfoundation.org.”
Bobb, in partnership with the Detroit Free Press, in December called on citizens to volunteer 100,000 hours collectively to tutor reading in DPS schools and help a child learn to read. Volunteers have exceeded Bobb’s new goal five times over. Over five years, the volunteer hours would total more than 2.5 million. To volunteer, go to http://www.detroit.k12.mi.us/readingcorps/ or call (313) 870-KNOW — 313 870-5669.
All volunteers will receive training and must undergo a criminal background check. Schedules are posted on DPS’ Web site. Each volunteer is asked to commit on average an hour a week.
