Upon hearing the announcement on competitive federal Race to the Top dollars today, Emergency Financial Manager Robert C. Bobb issued the following statement:
“I applaud President Obama and Secretary Duncan for this unprecedented investment in education. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to pursue bold innovations in how we manage our schools. The Detroit Public Schools will do everything we can to support the Michigan Department of Education in their application for a portion of the $4.35 Billion Race to the Top investment.
In addition, I want to assure the residents of the City of Detroit that the Detroit Public Schools will apply for every dollar of stimulus funds that we are aware of and eligible for, including applying directly to be a grantee under the Investing in Innovation Fund and the Teacher Incentive Fund.
This is our moment to take the bold steps that are necessary to turn around the Detroit Public Schools.
We will roll out a process by which the community can share their information and thoughts about how we reform education in the City of Detroit that will help us with developing our applications for Federal stimulus dollars.”
