Detroit Public Schools’ Denby High School students are holding a Poets for Peace event as part of Denby’s Summer Peace Program.
Denby has been holding peace events, including school-wide assemblies and interventions, in the wake of a violent incident. The Summer Peace Program was a collaborative effort by the School Social Work Crisis Team, DPS Security, DPS Gang Squad, Coaches, Administration, Teachers, parents and community members.
The staff is taking a multi-pronged approach, including providing emotional therapeutic support to students who experienced trauma; using the services of the DPS Police Gang Unit; orchestrating school-wide assemblies to provide important information, promote peace and school success; and providing other support services to any affected students to help them to remain in summer school successfully.
The schoolwide assemblies, which kicked off with information on summer school policies June 25, also included an appearance by Reggie Reg from 102.7FM. A later event included a meeting with Gang Squad.
On Friday, beginning at 12:40 p.m., the school will hold a Poets for Peace event, featuring Grand Slam champions T-Miller & Mic Write with student participants.
“We live with great hope and tremendous anticipation that we will have a safe and successful conclusion to summer school,” said Charlene Mallory, summer school program director.
