A TRIBUTE TO CONTINUOUS ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN THE DETROIT PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Detroit, MI — On the evening of May 13, graduating Detroit Public Schools scholars with 3.5 and higher GPAs, those with all ‘A’s, plus Valedictorians, will be honored at the 25th Excellence Awards Banquet at Cobo Center, in the Riverview Ballroom. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Since 1985, the District has honored its brightest graduating seniors who have taken their education seriously and excelled. Historically, the size of the academic ‘Excellence’ base of graduating students has remained virtually the same in every class since 2000 with the number of students with 3.5+ GPAs or all ‘A’s totaling near or over 400. This year, again the total is near the 400 mark at 384 students. Among those honored will be 41 Valedictorians from the 29 DPS high schools. Along with the honor of being recognized, those students with all ‘A’s will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Every year since the Excellence Awards program’s inception, on the average, the number of ‘Excellence’ students steadily increased. It is a testament to the amount of continuous academic achievement taking place in District schools considering the fact that in just the past 7 years, the Detroit Public Schools student population pool from which these scholars emerge, decreased by 60,000 students.

Parents, friends, supporters from the business community, and the teachers that the students feel most influenced their lives, will be present to share the celebration of the hard work and sacrifice it took for the students to raise themselves to a higher plane of academic achievement-a plane of ‘Excellence.’
