Detroit, MI — The Detroit Public Schools Office of Parent Involvement will host the annual
‘Title I Symposium at Frederick Douglass Academy, 2001 Warren, on Saturday, May 16,
from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The conference goal is to provide participants with an opportunity
to discuss various aspects of the Title 1 program for improved parent participation and to support
student achievement.

Parents and community members will be able to choose from 15 different workshops where they
can ask questions about many aspects of Title 1. A few of the workshop topics are ‘Building a
Dream’ that will review the components of School Improvement Plans and discuss the parents’
roles; ‘Problem Solvers’ where the steps that parents should take when they have concerns about
activities in their child’s class/school; ‘Navigating NCLB’ where the discussion will bring parents
up to date with the NCLB program under the Obama administration; and ‘Money Well Spent’
where parents will learn about the guidelines for using Title 1 funds and plan a parent activity
that supports a core academic subject.

To allow as many parents as possible to attend the Symposium, they will have access to free
childcare and transportation. The event will also feature a free breakfast and lunch, handouts of
schools supplies, and hands-on activities.
