Detroit, MI — There is no such thing as winning an award from the Grammy Foundation with ease. It takes hours of practice, sacrifice, great commitment, determination, belief in yourself and talent. The Foundation award is truly special because it is only for High School students.
Each year the Grammy Foundation sponsors a nationwide search that pits the best musical pieces from thousands of high school vocal and instrumental ensembles against each other by their applications to the Foundation to be selected as a GRAMMY Signature School. The search begins in September. The schools are first screened by the information in their application, to identify the finalists. Those schools are then requested to send additional materials such as a recording, further documenting the quality of their music. Finally, an independent committee reviews the materials and makes the recommendations for GRAMMY Signature School status.
In the most recent application process, only 14 school ensembles were selected as 2009 GRAMMY Signature Schools, nationwide. Among the finalists for this great honor were two Detroit Public Schools – Southeastern and The Detroit School of Arts (DSA). DSA made it through the finals and is the recipient of one of the six in the category of 2009 GRAMMY Signature Schools Enterprise Award plus a grant of $5,000 for the music program.
On Thursday, April 23, at 1:15 p.m., Foundation representatives will be at DSA and make the formal presentation of the GRAMMY Signature School status award to the school. In conjunction with the presentation, for the first time in the history of the competition, the Grammy Foundation will hold its traditional Music Careers session here. About 150 DSA students and 50 students from Northwestern High School, Golightly CTC and Southfield Lathrup will be in attendance.
The Careers session features a ‘super’ panel of noted representatives from the music industry who will interact with the students and help make them aware of industry career opportunities. This year the panel will include a teen favorite-GRAMMY winner, Chrisette Michele.
