WHO: More than 1,800 DPS students responded to the chance to win an all expenses paid trip to the inauguration of President Elect, Barack Obama. They sent in works of art, poetry, essays, and visual productions for the Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Creative Expression Contest created by the Board of Education. Those judging the entries had a difficult time because of the high quality of the students’ projects. But they finally selected the top entries from 49 students who will take a once in a lifetime trip to Washington, D.C. to witness the swearing in of our Nation’s 44th President. The response by the students was proof that their lessons about politics, the candidates, the election process and participating in mock elections accomplished an important purpose. They tremendously elevated the students’ interest in and knowledge about the election and their desire to be as close to the culmination as possible. Along with the trip the students will be honored at a reception where they will receive a special acknowledgement from the Board of Education.

WHEN: Thursday, January 8 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

WHERE: Detroit School of Arts, 123 Selden / 494-6000
